Under the Victims’ Code you have the right as someone affected by crime to be referred to services that support victims and have support services tailored to your needs.

You have a right to be offered support to help you cope and recover from the impact of crime. When you report a crime, Devon and Cornwall Police will talk to you initially and can arrange for you to be contacted by the Victim Care Unit.

The Victim Care Unit is run by the police and provides a personalised service tailored to your individual needs. This service is available whether or not the crime is being actively investigated. A Victim Care Officer will take the time to discuss your individual needs, how the crime has impacted you and explain the type of support available.

Support might include practical advice, information, signposting, or a referral to an appropriate support service. The unit works with a wide range of local voluntary and community sector organisations who can provide emotional and practical support, counselling or therapy. With your consent, the Victim Care Unit can refer you to the most appropriate service. There is no time limit to when this support can be accessed.

Your Victim Care Officer will also explain your rights under the Victims’ Code of Practice.

Within the Victim Care Unit is a restorative justice (RJ) coordinator, who can discuss with you the option of RJ in relation to what you have experienced. Being provided with information about this is another right under the Victims’ Code. You can find out more by visiting our restorative justice page.
